Dream House Update: Front Yard Landscaping Ideas

landscaping ideas for a narrow front yard, including star jasmine, dwarf italian cypress, and more

We’ve had some days lately with absolutely beautiful weather—sunshine, blue skies, gentle, balmy breezes. We have Springtime on the brain, and it’s inspiring us to start working on some landscaping at our house. Because we have absolutely nothing at this point. There’s no way we can do all of the landscaping this year–there’s just too much to do–but our house goals for this year include making the front yard look beautiful. It’s kind of a narrow area (the sweeping lawns will be elsewhere), so I’ve spent a lot of time lately looking for landscaping ideas for narrow areas. We have been picking up plants, pavers, potting soil, and mulch over the past few weekends, and have a basic design ready to go. Italian Cypress, Star Jasmine, Boxwood, and more! You can see our favorite inspiration photos and landscaping ideas on my latest Style Spotters post for Better Homes & Gardens. And if you have any landscaping tips, favorite plants, or websites to recommend for great yard inspiration, leave me a comment below!

  1. Since it is official spring, you make a great point about how now is the perfect time to start considering your landscaping projects for the coming year. It can be really important that specific plants are put in the ground at the right time of year for them to take root and be healthy. Talking to a professional landscaper can help put together a timeline for which projects and plantings need to be addressed first so plants don’t end up dying on you. Good luck with your projects!

  2. If you have a small space between your house and the street, try putting a low fence in front. It gives the illusion that your house is farther from the street than it really is, and it also makes for a great space for planting flowers and vines.

  3. Hey there. Great site! The link for front yard ideas in this article is broken sadly; can you update it? I’d really like to see the photos and ideas you mention. As for website recommendations, I came across this article (https://carveyourcreation.com/small-front-yard-landscaping-ideas) about front yard landscaping, and while they lack useful images, they do have some good ideas related to flowering plants and hard landscaping.

    1. Hi! BHG.com actually migrated a bunch of old content to a new location last year, but they didn’t move a lot of my dream house posts, including this one. So I don’t think that article exists anymore anywhere. I do plan to rewrite all of those old posts, or at least put the photos somewhere so that the info is available. Stay tuned!
