A delicious classic--homemade chocolate milkshakes

My mom makes lots of really delicious foods. She makes good fried chicken, good brisket, good bread, good chicken noodle soup, good pecan rings; basically good everything. One of my favorite things that she makes—and it has dawned on me that most kids’ moms don’t necessarily make these all the time for them—is chocolate milkshakes. Homemade hamburgers, tater tots, and my mom’s chocolate milkshakes were on constant, delicious repeat at our house growing up. Friday nights, birthdays, and special celebrations frequently got the burgers and homemade shakes treatment at dinnertime. And the chocolate milkshake love has spilled over into the next generation: my kids and all the other grandkids love Grammy’s chocolate shakes. I guess we’re all pretty lucky to have gotten homemade milkshakes so regularly!

Recipe type: Drinks
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients
  • 1.5 qt. good quality vanilla ice cream, slightly softened
  • up to 1 cup good quality chocolate syrup or hot fudge sauce
  • ½ cup milk
  • a splash of vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. In a blender or in a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. If you use a full cup of chocolate syrup or hot fudge sauce, you will get chocolatey milkshakes, which I happen to like. Who wants a chocolate milkshake that tastes like a vanilla milkshake??? But you can always start with a little less than the maximum and add more to taste. You can also add more milk to get the consistency you want. Blend or mix with a hand-mixer until smooth and well-combined. Makes about 48 oz of milkshake, so 3-4 servings
