For me, Cinco de Mayo is all about bright colors and bold flavors. I wanted to make some kind of celebratory, Cinco de Mayo-inspired cupcake toppers that would be big, colorful, and over-the-top. I think I nailed it!
These Fiesta Fringe cupcake toppers will look perfect on your Cinco de Mayo cupcakes this weekend, and they’d look equally adorable at a birthday party. You could even change the colors of streamers used to match the color scheme of a grown-up party or shower. They make me happy just looking at them!
1. You’ll need crepe paper streamers in lots of different colors, a good pair of scissors, 6″ lollipop sticks, and double-stick tape. You can use toothpicks instead of lollipop sticks, but you’ll end up with far fewer rows of fringe.
2. Begin by cutting 3″ sections of streamers. On one of the long sides of each piece, cut fringe. My fringe is about 1/8″ wide, and I cut about 2/3 of the way across the streamer. You can either fringe each streamer section separately, or stack them and cut them all at the same time, which goes a lot faster!
3. Tear off a piece of tape that is the same width as you first streamer section. One of the great things about using double stick tape is that if you cut a piece that is too short, you can just add another piece, and if you cut a piece that’s too long, you can fold the excess over on itself. Line one end of a lollipop stick up with the top edge of the tape.
4. Carefully roll the lollipop stick across the streamer. You might have to make little adjustments as you go to keep rolling in a straight line.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with another section of fringed streamer in a different color. Line up the top of the tape with bottom of the previous streamer.
6. Keep going until you have 8 different rows of fringe. You can have fewer rows, but I wouldn’t recommend having more than 8. You should end up with 1-1.5 inches of exposed lollipop stick.Ā Because these are a little heftier and a little longer than most cupcake toppers, you need to push the stick all the way to the bottom of the cupcake. It’s ok if the bottom row of fringe is touching the frosting.
very cute idea!!
Thanks Annie!
I love this! What a fabulous idea Melissa.
Thank you Ali!
These are so cute! I just may have to make cupcakes this weekend now… Anyways, I just wanted to stop by and say hello, I was in the Alt class Monday night š
Hi Amanda! That class was a good one–I took notes like crazy! Thanks for saying hello, and I’ve had such a good time reading your blog; it is beautiful!
Thank You
Ahhhh how cute are those!!!! They totally remind me of those spear things matadors throw at bulls…but way happier and more festive
Tan, they totally remind me to those too! And also the shirts that mariachis sometimes wear that have layers and layers and layers of colored ruffles all down the sleeves.
Love these! Our school is having a Father/Daughter Dance in two weeks. The theme is “A Night in Paris.” I can’t wait to make these in hot pink, black & white! xo
Karen, I think that’s a great idea–they’ll look beautiful!
I have never had a Cinco de Mayo party but you’re starting to make me reconsider. Another adorable and simple project.
Cinco de Mayo parties are fun! We never do anything huge, but we always get together with family and friends and eat delicious food. Those are the only requirements!
These are so happy! I feel like they look like fireworks, which would make them equally appropriate for Fourth of July celebrations, don’t you think? I’d also love to find them on my birthday cupcakes.
They are so happy! I still haven’t thrown them away because I can’t bear to; they’re just too pretty. I think they’d go with basically any and every party!
Lulu! wowzers these are so cute! thanks for sharing! š (found you through you are my fave!)
Hi Lyndsay! Thanks for saying hi! And your sailboat cake on YAMF is so adorable. I’m so envious of people with cake-decorating skills!
Gorgeous! I’m in love with these… I’m going to be trying this out on some drink stirrers for my sister-in-laws shower this weekend!
Shared your project on my inspiration board this morning – http://lemonthistle.com/fiesta-baby-shower-inspiration/
Awesome, Colleen! Have a great baby shower, and thanks for sharing my project in your round-up!
Im making these for my sons 1st Fiesta! they are adorable.. the cupcakes looks so yummy too and I like the white because it doesn’t take away from the color.. can you tell my what kind of forting that is?
*frosting haha
Hi Morgan! It’s either vanilla frosting or cream cheese frosting! I usually go for cream cheese frosting as my first choice, so I’m guessing that’s what it is. Have fun!
how long would it take to make a dozen?
Hi Kim! I think you could definitely get a dozen of them made in an hour or less.
