This week’s SMS recipe, Strawberry Shortcakes, was chosen by Wendy of Pink Stripes. You can find the full recipe on her blog here, and check out the Sweet Melissa Sundays blogroll to see how other bakers fared with this recipe.
I love strawberry shortcake no matter what form the cake part comes in. Angel food cake, Twinkies, biscuits, yellow cake, those spongy things from the grocery store, they’re all good to me. But an already delicious dessert is definitely made better by using homemade shortcakes. This week’s shortcakes were the biscuity type with a little lemon zest added. They were very, very tasty and came together in a snap. But I think I like my sister-in-law’s recipe just a tiny bit more; they have lots of vanilla and bake up just a little taller. Click here for that recipe.
**The pictures are not up to my usual standard of clarity. Even if a photo isn’t gorgeous at least it should be in focus, right?! And that’s not mint I garnished my shortcake with (as per the recipe). I’m not sure what it is! But it looked mint-ish and I’m not dead, so I think it was OK!!**
Very pretty and fresh looking! I love the mint on the plate.
I think the photos are great, love the fake mint. Glad you are alive! I will have to try your other recipe now that I know I love strawberry shortcakes!
Did you say twinkies? Sounds a little evil.
Hmm, a better recipe? You can bet I’ll be checking that out!
Love the minty photo – it looks super pretty!
Yours looks delicious, the photos are great and I love the mint.
Your shortcake looks wonderful. I’m glad you liked it. Thanks for baking along with me this week!
Great looking shortcakes. Im glad you tried it. It’s fun to try new things even if we have a tried and true recipe we love! I thought the lemon zest was a great ingred. for these cakes!
Oh my goodness you’re so funny – you don’t know what the leaf is, hahaa. When I looked at first, I thought to myself “Did she garnish her shortcake with basil?” 🙂 This looks delish (and the idea of twinkifying strawberry shortcake is simply amazing 🙂
Awesome shortcakes!
Those are lovely photos. It’s always hard to try a recipe when you have an absolute favorite version.
I think your photos look lovely! I’m always so jealous when people garnish their meals or desserts so nicely before taking photos. I can never remember to do it.
great job! i couldn’t tell that wasn’t really mint!
Great looking shortcakes!
Hmm..so what did the “fake mint” taste like?
These look lovely! Thanks for sharing the other recipe!
Wow, your shortcakes turned out so well! Great job. I’m uber-impressed. I love the “mint-esque” garnish. I thought these were delicious, so your sister-in-law’s recipe must be totally killer!!
Great shortcakes!! Lots of strawberries, yum! I like the height. This was my first time making shortcakes and I really liked them. I’ll have to give your recipe a shot.
